Our History


Back in the 80s, when most computers were big enough to fill a room, Global Office Director Chris Tacon won a small Commodore VIC – 20 personal computer in a competition at the Canterbury Home Show. It sparked a fascination with computing and the tech industry that eventually led to the establishment of Global Office with fellow directors Nick Witteman and Phil de Bruin. 

Chris started his first computer company in 1996.  Practical Computer Solutions (PCS) – a jack-of-all-trades company did everything from building computers to supplying cabling. The arrival of Nick in 2001 and his keen interest in software development added yet another dimension. In 2004, the hardware side of Practical Computer Solutions was sold, and the rest of the company was renamed to Global Office.

“We suddenly became a bespoke software business with a great deal more direction and business started to really grow,” Chris says.

“We also learnt a lot along the way – tried things that we shouldn’t have; struggled through the Global Financial Crisis; and worked from several locations as a result of the Canterbury earthquakes – and we’re now stronger than we have ever been.”

Chris counts the steady New Zealand economy and increased demand for cloud-based software as important factors in Global Office’s success.
