Know your numbers

How well do you know your numbers?

Without knowing the score, how do you know if you’re winning or losing?

There are plenty of parallels that can be drawn between the business world and the sporting one. To succeed in either you need to follow a clear game plan – and that plan requires knowing your team’s strength and weaknesses.

Take Sir Richie for example. As All Blacks captain, he would have checked the scoreboard at every stoppage in play. He wouldn’t have waited till the end of the game, crossing his fingers in the hope that he was ahead once the whistle blew. Having that awareness helps you to react with confidence when the game changes.

It’s the same for leaders in business. Without knowing the score, how do you know if you’re winning or losing?

Ask yourself – what do you know (and not know) about the numbers in your business?

• How many hours of the working day are your employees billing?
• How efficient are the different parts of your organisation?
• What will your company bank balance look like in two months, six months or a year’s time?
• How many people visit your website? And of those people, how many are engaging you to work
with them?
• How many followers do you have on social media? How many of those engage with you on a
regular basis?

With the myriad of software systems available to help businesses measure and manage these numbers, there is no excuse for managers and owners to be left in the dark.
